[Record Protection Devices] Vault Doors, Class 350, Insulated

See General Information for Record Protection Devices

Insulated Vault Doors consist of an assembly of insulated doors, single or in pairs, closing into and interlocking with an insulated frame and equipped with latches or bolts, a locking mechanism and are effective in withstanding:

1. A standardized fire of controlled extent and severity for at least: 2 hrs (reaching 1850 F), or 4 hrs (reaching 2000 F), or 6 hrs (reaching 2150 F) without exceeding an interior temperature of 350 F during or after the fire exposure, 2 in. from the unexposed face of the door in a plane of each side door joint, 6 in. down from top door joint and in a plane of the top door joint at its middle, when installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
2. Application of a standard hose stream, for 1 min and reheat for 1/2 of the classification period, without destroying the usability of paper records stored in the vault.

Insulated Vault Doors shall be installed in fire resistive vaults constructed as specified in the National Fire Protection Association Standard for Protection of Records, NFPA 232. A vault is a fire resistive enclosure constructed as to provide both fire resistance and structural stability and it may be located in fire resistive or nonfire resistive buildings. Vaults are used exclusively for storage and no work is to be carried on in the vault.

Vaults shall be equipped with insulated doors having a fire resistance having at least equal to the hourly rating of the vault walls.

The Classification Marking on the Insulated Vault Doors Class 350 covers the assembly consisting of the door, frame, hardware, and it designates the hourly fire rating. The protection of the opening depends upon proper installation of all parts as specified in the manufacturer's instructions.

The basic standard used to investigate products in this category is UL 155, "Tests for Fire Resistance of Vault and File" .

The Classification Marking on Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (shown below) on the product is the only method provided by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. to identify products manufactured under its Classification and Follow-Up Service.
